Here are some of our FAQ’s
How long does the procedure take?
The procedure usually takes around 20-30 minutes. We will also spend 5 minutes at the beginning of the appointment talking through the procedure and obtaining consent as well as 5 minutes at the end explaining post op recovery and “do’s and don’ts”.
Can I bring my partner?
Yes of course. You can bring any adult into the operating room that you wish. Unfortunately for safety reasons we cannot have any children or pets in the room.
Can I drive home after?
No. The DVLA is clear in its guidance on driving after local anaesthetic. You must not drive for 24 hours after the procedure. It is advised that you make suitable arrangements to get home after your procedure.
Can I have an alcoholic drink or sedative to calm my nerves?
Prior to the procedure you will need to sign a consent form which is not valid if you are under the influence of any sedative or alcohol. If you are prone to being anxious during your medical procedure, let us know and we will see what we can do to help.
Will it affect my libido or ability to get erections?
There is no evidence to suggest that either libido or the ability to get and maintain an erection are affected by having a Vasectomy.
How long do I need to recover?
We advise that you are able to rest and put your feet up for the first 24 hours post procedure. After that we advise that you do not do any vigorous exercise or heavy lifting for 7 days after. If you work in an office based role, you are likely able to return to work the next day.
When can I go back to the gym or cycle?
We recommend that you avoid vigorous exercise or heavy lifting for 7 days after the procedure or at least until you feel back to your normal self. The time to return to cycling would be slightly longer at two weeks.
When can I have sex again?
7 days of abstinence post procedure is sufficient but you might find erections painful initially. You may find blood in your semen for the first few ejaculations after the procedure or if you try to have intercourse too soon afterwards.
